Organised by Radiation, Environmental and Molecular Biology Department of the H.Niewodniczański Institute of Nuclear Physics, with cooperation of the Chair of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine of Jagiellonian University.

Many methods are now available for monitoring humans and measuring genetic damage and other changes in macromolecules and body tissues. The Alexander Hollaender Course will concentrate on the commonly measured biomarkers (chromosome aberrations; micronuclei; DNA damage), but others (p53 protein levels; metabolic genotypes) will also be addressed. Distinguished scientists from the fields of toxicology, molecular biology, cytogenetics and epidemiology will present and discuss the state-of-the-art knowledge and recent developments in human monitoring for biomarkers. The four-day course will include both lectures and demonstrations. The organiser is planning to arrange for the financial support needed to attract participants from former East Block Countries. Tuition fee of 100$ will cover teaching and course materials. An enrolment of 30 students is planned. These students are expected primarily to be junior researchers and graduate students, although the course would also be open to the more senior investigator who wants to conduct regional dialogue and create a network in the field of molecular epidemiology, human monitoring and its uses.

Scientific Committee of the Alexander Hollaender Course "HUMOGEF":

Prof. Diana Anderson
Prof. William Au
Prof. Antonina Cebulska-Wasilewska
Prof.Wiesław Jędrychowski
Prof. Radim Šrám
Dr Ray Tice
Dr. Errol Zeiger

Other events:

The Course takes place immediately after the "Molecular Epidemiology in Preventive Medicine - Achievements and New Challenges" conference, organized by Prof. Wiesław Jędrychowski, Chair of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, Jagiellonian University Collegium Medicum in Kraków, June 20-22.2002.

Participants of the Alexander Holleander course will have the opportunity to take part in this conference's lectures. Subjects discussed during these lectures are, in some ways, supplementary to the HUMOGEF course and should provide scientific and practical references for the techniques taught during the course.
